Referee Rules & Ethics

Dodgeball is a popular sport played in both recreational and competitive settings. The objective of the game is to eliminate players from the opposing team by hitting them with thrown balls while avoiding being hit yourself. Here are the basic rules of dodgeball:
1. Teams: The game is typically played between two teams, though variations with more teams are also possible. Each team consists of an equal number of players, usually six to ten per team, depending on the available space and equipment.
2. Court: The game is played on a rectangular court, which can be indoors or outdoors. The court is divided into two equal halves by a centerline. There is also a boundary line at the back of each half, indicating the out-of-bounds area.
2. Court: The game is played on a rectangular court, which can be indoors or outdoors. The court is divided into two equal halves by a centerline. There is also a boundary line at the back of each half, indicating the out-of-bounds area.
3. Dodgeballs: Dodgeballs are soft, lightweight balls used in the game. The number of dodgeballs used can vary, but typically, six to ten balls are used in a game. The balls should be of equal size and weight for fairness.
4. Starting the Game: The game begins with both teams lining up on their respective back boundary lines. The dodgeballs are placed at the centerline, and the players are allowed to move forward to retrieve the balls when signaled to start.
5. Gameplay: Once the game starts, players rush to the centerline to grab the dodgeballs. Players must stay behind the attack line on their side of the court while attempting to throw the balls at the opposing team’s players.
6. Throwing and Elimination: Players throw the dodgeballs at opponents to eliminate them. To eliminate an opponent, a player must hit them below the shoulders with a live ball (a ball that has not touched the ground or any other object before hitting the opponent). If a player catches a thrown ball, the thrower is eliminated, and the catching team may bring back one of their eliminated players.
7. Blocking and Deflecting: Players can use a ball to block or deflect an incoming throw. However, if the ball is caught after it has been deflected, the thrower is safe, and the player who deflected the ball is eliminated.
8. Out-of-Bounds and Boundaries: Players must stay within the boundaries of the court during the game. If a player steps or falls out of bounds, they are considered out. Players cannot throw balls from out-of-bounds areas.
9. Game Duration: The game continues until one team eliminates all the players of the opposing team. Alternatively, a time limit can be set, and the team with the most remaining players at the end of the time wins.
10. Fair Play: Dodgeball is a competitive game, but it’s important to emphasize fair play and sportsmanship. Players should not engage in intentional rough play or target opponents in dangerous areas, such as the head. Referees or organizers can enforce penalties for violations.
